Headed down to NYC last weekend for my usual dose of underground hip-hop at LYRICIST LOUNGE, hosted by hip-hop aficionado Danny Castro. Was the shizzzzzzz!!!! Now if you don’t know about Lyricist Lounge, try and ask somebody. Google it. Then make sure you check it out for yourSELF at 92YTRIBECA on the last Saturday of every month, ’cause nothing you hear could bring you close to a full understanding – ya gotta see fuh yaself! Danny and his buddy Anthony Marshall started it back in 1991 as an open mic spot, evolved to a mobile showcase of talent, spread to the production of albums and an MTV show over the years. Many of its affiliates (like Mos’ Def, Puffy, Eminem) did find widespread commercial acclaim, but if you’re not impressed by the repetitive hollow clatterings that pass for good hip-hop these days, and you’re ignited by sound lyrics delivering relevant & revolutionary commentary, then Lyricist Lounge is the place for you…anyhow, Here are the highlights…If I ever get some pics from Joy, I will upload them.
- Linked up with my sistren Joy for the first time there. The videos on youtube are thanks to her.
- It was two Bajan gals, a self-declared ‘plain American’ (although apparently she got Trini roots somewhere?), and a Californian. Which we decided is far enough from the east coast to count as an island. And Joy gave him honorary Bajan status by the time we left anyhow.
- Here’s a few snippets – check out the videos below (thanks, Joy!!!): NY OIL, Swiss Chris, Farrah Burns.
